The problem facing the UK and most Western European nations is not simply that of mass migration but that these societies lack a story that could bind people together
There was racism and tension in the 60s (or heightened difference awareness as neither immigrants or locals were advised, aware, or prepared for the influx of immigrants particularly in the West Midlands). The response by Roy Jenkins in 1966 was a speech in which he declared integration was
... not as a flattening process of assimilation but as equal opportunity, accompanied by cultural diversity, in an atmosphere of mutual tolerance.
This was the beginning of the delusional view about the multiculturalism of 'mutual tolerance' as he embarked on a series of progressive reforms to build his vision of a "civilised society", the sowing of the seeds that now bear fruit in our increasingly balkanised society that has turned my home into a giant hotel as we 'guests', for that is all we are now, ignore each other as much as possible. The deep flaw was to have no strategy or foresight over how to deal with the intolerance that now accompanies diversity.
The story that bound us was taught in all schools until the deconstruction that took over universities filtered down into schools and our inheritance was no longer passed onto the young. Now, that destructive attitude to history and culture has permeated all our institutions even in banks where the product of debased education has produced debanking for political views (e.g Farage) and musuems and galleries that are obsessed with promoting the claimed sin slavery and colonialism of artists or collectors. Worse, it has penetrated policing. Senior officers are all products of graduation from our c universities. When I grew (in a previous century) we were proud that ours was a country in which we did not beed to fear the police. These days you would foolish not to fear them. Say the 'wrong' thing .....
Perhaps the only thing the Conservatives did that was worthwhile was Gove's educational and syllabus reforms (after many battles with the blob) which is why Brigitte Philipson's 'review' is so sinister and depressing. Labour do not want our story reinstated and they are in power. With another four years of vandalism ahead room 101 awaits.
The steady erosion of the traditional family, the increasing fatherless and disparaging of traditional marriage has brought us to this sad state in the west. Instead of celebrating traditional marriage between a man and woman and all that entails including having big families and the Christian heritage that the west shared we celebrate warped forms of that state. So our replacement rate has slowed and governments that have increasingly are having to prop up fatherless children and single women . Now we see the long term effects of that with people from a culture that does hang on to its religion and create large families that are allowed to invade the west.
Governments, media and authorities are clinging to a residual Christian virtue in a warped way of tolerating this invasion.
This analysis applies with equal force to the United States. It helps explain the deep divisions among us and the gathering power of the populist response to the progressive revision of the national story.
Those Americans not demoralized by the effort to undermine the national identity, are pissed off! Accordingly they are voting for the party that wants to Make America Great Again!

Why is anyone surprised?
