Unfortunately the Left is not the Left anymore. It suffers from amnesia and does not remember what it once stood for.

Of course you are right about the responsibility of ll - but there is a distinction to be made between those in power who create the condition that is ripe for appeasement and the rest who feel powerless and confused about how to react

Appeasement failed in 1938-with 'Peace in our time'- and it's failing now with 'don't look back in anger', 'a lone operative ', 'militants' and 'freedom fighters'.

The west has hollowed itself out, led by political opportunists who prefer moral cowardice to courage of convictions, a thoroughly deranged left/lib/ cohort of progressives who have allowed themselves to be seduced by resurgent Islamism and a network of activists and media types, brainwashed by CRT and DEI, who have elevated self hatred to a cultish cancellation of history, achievement, prosperity and freedom of thought ,opinion and speech.

Moral inversion brings us 'Gays for Gaza' and 'From the river to the sea' and sneering reluctance to accept the grotesque atrocities of October the 7th.

Christianity, Judaism ,atheism and others are now routinely criticised, sneered at and 'othered', while Islam enjoys the cast iron protection of the Islamophobia rules .

The Czech democracy was sacrificed in 1938, as Hitler's annexation of the Sudetenland was sanctioned by the west's leaders, eager to approve of Hitler's promises, while now the Middle East's sole democracy is being isolated, undermined and ordered to abide by the UN's demands, as Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis and their Iranian facilitators win the propaganda war.

Can the west survive and find the moral courage and self respect to see off Islamist entryism and intimidation, or will apathy, self interest and media bias win the day?

Moral cowardice and fear surely play a large part in this insidious phenomenon, but it is not isolated to just the so called elites or “leaders” of modern societies. Most everyone shares in this blame, either overtly or by staying silent. Human nature, for at least part of society. Seems best to not antagonize those prepared to kill you for the truth and go after those who would encourage you for the truth.

Good article thank you.

Maybe Enoch Powell was smarter than left wing interpretations allowed. Being cautious about immigration is not anti-foreigner per se, but it always amazes me how western countries allow in so many whose worldview is diametrically opposed to everything that facilitated their wonderful country in the first place. Oh, and especially if many of said immigrants actually think it’s ok to kill you (only on religious grounds of course). Cowards indeed.

Good question answer - 'not for long'. We need to get our act together.

An excellent piece: how can one fight a thing if you can't (or refuse to) name it? My sense is that the Left have started to reap what they have sown; the Left have intentionally or otherwise acted as Trojan horse to Islamism, and as a force they seem to have been swallowed by this. For many on the Left they saw so many superficial similarities with Muslim communities- domestically and internationally - that allowed them to pose as allies to an 'oppressed' group that seemed to challenge the existing order.

That many in the Muslim community suffer the effects different outcomes is taken as evidence of discrimination, the Left attributed this to structural inequality, and from this the Left discovered a new raison d'etre. This process is repeated internationally with the perverse outcome that the Left embraced (or excused) a reactionary, militaristic expansionist ideology in the name of anti-Imperialism.

The tragedy of all this is that the reverse is true. In abandoning it's historic belief in Universalism and Liberation of the individual the Left has embraced the very opposite of what it used to stand for. The biggest barrier we have is that we need to convince the constituency that the Left spoke to that they are conniving at the destruction of everything they said they believed in, and which many still do hold as fundamental, insights that they, and we have benefitted from. The problem now is that we are seeing this process at it’s conclusion and the ‘Left’ now exists in name only with a social base and values far removed from its origin.
